Quick Bite: Ramen Ichiban

Ramen Ichiban

BY ANGELA YEAGER
Statesman Journal

Place: 4845 Commercial St. SE

Phone: (503) 391-6618

Hours: 11 a.m. to 8 p.m. Monday through Friday and noon to 8 p.m. Saturday

Cuisine: Japanese

Cost: $4 to $8

Paper or plastic: Cash or check only

Length of meal: Food was served hot within five minutes. Total meal time was about 35 minutes.

Atmosphere: Japanese flags beckon visitors from the outside. Once inside, a few small tables and chairs fill the tiny space. The chatter in Japanese from patrons added to the ambience.

In my opinion: I’m always on the lookout for good Japanese food, and this small, unassuming spot didn’t disappoint. The man who took our order suggested the Teri Chicken with Rice ($5), and I was glad we took his advice. The chicken was tender, had little to no fat and the homemade teriyaki sauce was out of this world. My dining partner ordered the Gyoza pot stickers ($6), which came on a bed of flavorful yakisoba noodles. These exceptional (and also homemade) pot stickers featured finely minced pork with cabbage, green onion, garlic and ginger. The distinctive flavors tasted fresh and left both of us wanting more.
